Important Healthcare Update - Public Engagement Event

New 26/10/21

The local CCCG/NHS are planning to put a new medical Centre in Coulsdon to cater for the increase in population in the south of the Borough. This new medical centre will be on the site of the southern playground of the old Smitham School, adjacent to Woodcote Grove Road, Coulsdon, (next door to the former CALAT Centre).

The new centre will be used by a number of GPs in the south of the borough.

These are some possible uses at the new centre:

* General Practice

* Musculoskeletal hub

* Rheumatology clinic

* Talking Therapy

* Integrated Community Team (health, social care and voluntary sector services)

* Falls & Frailty clinic

* Children and midwifery

* Housing and benefits advice

A drop in session has been arranged next week on Thursday 4 and also Friday 5 November 2021 from 1.00pm to 6.00pm at the Coulsdon Methodist Church, 83 Brighton Road, Coulsdon, CR5 2BE. A talk will be given at 1.30pm each day.

This new medical facility may well be used by our local GPs. See also this pdf for more information.

Sanderstead Clinic - Possible Closure

New 30/1/19

The RRA have been made aware in the last week or so, of many local rumours circulating about the possible closure of the Sanderstead Clinic in Rectory Park, within the next few months and to sell off the site to build a block of flats. The Croydon Health Services NHS Trust own the site.

The RRA when made aware, took this up with our MP Chris Philp, the Sanderstead Ward Councillors and the Croydon CCG. None of them were aware of this possible development.

Chris Philp e-mailed Matthew Kershaw, the interim CE of the Croydon Health Services NHS Trust last week, and this is Mr Kershaw's response below, received today (30 Jan):

"We continually review our estate to make the best use of all of our premises to provide the best, most accessible and most efficient service we can to our patients. There are no agreed plans to close Sanderstead Clinic which is an important part of our estate and sees 4,500 patients a year.

Our ongoing review includes how we utilise some of the empty clinic space in Purley War Memorial Hospital which is 2 miles away from Sanderstead and provides a range of services including minor injuries and minor illnesses. Early conversations have begun to see what additional services, like physiotherapy or speech & language therapy, could move in to Purley to make this a central part of our care for people in the south of the borough but this does not mean changes at Sanderstead would have to happen.

At this stage we are only looking at what is possible. No decisions have been made and there would be no movement of services without a clear explanation to local people."

This Clinic, with some other services, primarily houses a Baby cafe, Children's Speech and Language Therapy, Podiatry and the Croydon Moorfields Community Eye Clinic and is an important service in the local community.

We'll keep residents updated if we hear anymore.

Riddlesdown Pharmacy, Lower Barn Rd - Posted 20/6/15

The RRA are sure that many of you are grateful for the exceptionally dedicated service which our local Pharmacist Naseem and her extremely helpful staff in Riddlesdown provide, not just for dispensing prescriptions but other valuable medicines and supplies in the shop.

At the moment, we can obtain our prescription forms at our doctors’ practice, and we can pick up our medicines direct from the chemist straight away or within a few working days. If your GP surgery offers an internet service then you can re-order your repeat prescription over the internet and have it sent to a nominated pharmacy by electronic means.

Funding for a pharmacy service is broadly calculated on the number of prescriptions dispensed by the service. In 2006 the essential small pharmacies scheme was introduced to ensure pharmacies with low volumes and who were more than 1 km from the next nearest pharmacy were supported. This scheme ended in March of this year (2015). Whilst we remain confident that our local pharmacy will continue to flourish and support the residents of Riddlesdown we must not be complacent.

The truth is, the only way to be certain of maintaining our local pharmacy and indeed our local Post Office, where the also extremely helpful Vee Jay is in charge, is to use them. With more and more local shops and services fast disappearing to the large chains and supermarkets we must ensure our local pharmacy service, which is so essential for many local people, especially the elderly, continues to operate. Are you aware for example that your GP surgery can now send your prescription electronically directly to the pharmacy for you to pick up? Naseem, will also provide free of charge and even deliver to clients who are house bound, pre-packed, weekly medicine trays for the elderly or infirm or those who might be confused or forgetful about taking their tablets.

Did you also know that besides dispensing your prescriptions, our local pharmacy also provides a wide range of free NHS services including, new medication consultations and medicine reviews both in the shop and if necessary in the persons own home, if they are housebound. Cardiovascular health checks, including cholesterol testing, can also be provided at the pharmacy along with a one to one stop smoking clinic. The pharmacy is also part of the Croydon Minor Ailment Scheme whereby the Pharmacist is able to prescribe over the counter medications for a whole plethora of common conditions. This service is free to children and adults who are exempt from prescription charges, thus avoiding unnecessary visits to the GP.

Established over 40 years ago Riddlesdown pharmacy provides an essential client centred service for the local community and with no other pharmacies nearby we need to make sure we use and keep it.

The RRA would ask that you use the Riddlesdown Pharmacy for your prescription service. Please give them a try and also help and support all our local shops in both Lower Barn Rd and Mitchley Ave which are a lifeline to many, especially the elderly. Thank you.

Footnote; Repeat Electronic prescriptions

Increasingly, GP practices are using the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS). This allows repeat prescriptions to be sent electronically to the pharmacist or dispenser of the patient's choice. This should improve both efficiency and convenience for all concerned. Access to the relevant system is through the use of smart cards. A GP applies an electronic signature to the prescription by using the PIN number for their smart card. A prescription can be cancelled at any point up until it is dispensed. More details about this service should be available on the website of your GP practice or ask at your practice.
